With human bedmates I’d never been a spooner. Human males have sharp knees and elbows. They don’t take kindly to being pushed away. They snore a lot louder than Casey, whose faint rumble is the sound of rest. They will say, if you get up and open a window, “It’s already freezing in here.” After a certain age they get up and wander about in search of a more comfortable spot. Comfort blooms in Casey. All day he cultivates it, a shake and a stretch before every change of position. His downward dog flowing into the upward. When sleep falls upon him, he wants to be exactly where he is.

One night his head grazed the silk cushion and came to rest on my pillow, directly under my chin. His breath ruffled the hairs on my arm, a living breeze. I hadn’t done a thing to call this moment into being, yet here we were, my hand traveling the length of his warm body. Rising and falling with his breath. In relaxation class, I compared my breath to everyone else’s. They were champions, I was the laggard.

Next to Casey, I suspended judgment. I simply noticed his soft exhalation as my limbs grew heavy (so that meditation teacher had been right). My thoughts became pleasantly jumbled, like first drafts of dreams. In my last conscious thought of the night, I knew we were breathing as one.
